Not 'n Nows in Kalamazoo, Plainwell, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Lansing have closed and about 230 workers lost their jobs, Bennett says. The chain will continue to operate five restaurants, and independent franchise holders also continue to operate 17 restaurants in Michigan and other states. The Hot 'n Now chain was started in Kalamazoo in 1983 by businessman William F. Van Domelen. He sold what was a growing fast-food business to Taco Bell in 1990 and Taco Bell sold it in turn to Hot 'n Now LLC. At one time the chain included more than 73 restaurants and had locations in Wisconsin and Indiana, as well as Michigan.
