10/13/04: An economic issue with impact well beyond the upcoming election is the price of oil. Already up 66% this year, prices are expected to grow still more in the winter heating season, and there is no way that won't be felt at the bottom line of real estate owners. The huge increase has been blamed on e verything from a robust Chinese economy and troubles in Nigeria to speculation by oil traders. Reasons notwithstanding, these escalations will be passed onto all consumers--including tenants--and reflected in the cost of transporting goods. There is much discussion about the long - term effects of oil pricing on the economy amidst a fragile recovery. It will be interesting to see how the two candidates will discuss this problem in tonight's debate about domestic issues.
