The south Cartersville project will house 250,000 sf of commercial space, 80,000 sf of office, a 170,000-sf business park and 844 townhomes and single-family residences. The site is at Old Alabama Road and GA 61. Because of its size, the project is also being reviewed by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

In a separate development, CW Matthews Contracting Corp. of Marietta has applied for a development permit to build a 50-acre asphalt-making plant that Cherokee County residents have opposed since 1988.

Vulcan Materials Co. of Birmingham, AL opened the quarry site at GA 369 at the Forsyth County line 16 years ago but has never been allowed to operate an asphalt plant on its property, area industrial brokers familiar with the controversy tell GlobeSt.com. Vulcan has been unsuccessful in lawsuits filed against the county over the years.

Area brokers tell GlobeSt.com the Atlanta Regional Commission must first approve the Matthews' rezoning request for the plant before the county can review the project.
