SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ-National Realty & Development Corp. has started construction for the 242,000-sf second phase of Hadley Shopping Center just off of I-287 here. Completion of the phase is slated for the fall of 2005.
The second phase, when added to the existing 316,000-sf shopping complex, will turn Hadley Shopping Center into a 558,000-sf power center. The original center, which opened in 1984, is currently anchored by a Kohl's department store, a Pathmark supermarket and Regal Cinemas.
The complex is situated on a portion of the site of the defunct Hadley Airport, an historic general aviation center that closed almost 50 years ago and has since been redeveloped in parcels. The airport had, in the first half of the 20th century, been the site of frequent arrivals and departures by such famous aviators as Charles Lindbergh.
The tenant line-up for the Phase II development includes a nearly 142,000-sf Target as well as a 45,000-sf Marshalls Mega Store, an 8,190-sf Famous Footwear and a 6,000-sf Harmon Cosmetics, according to a spokesperson for the Purchase, NY-based NRDC.
The phase, which will also include a Somerset Bank branch on an outparcel site, only has some 17,000 sf left to be leased, according to the spokesperson. The expansion will also turn the Hadley Shopping Center into the largest center in the New Jersey portion of NRDC's portfolio.
Besides drawing from an estimated 10-mile radius in the densely populated Middlesex County in Central New Jersey, the center is also expected to benefit from existing commercial development within the region, the spokesperson adds. Within a three-mile radius of the site is a total of more than three million sf of office and industrial space and its accompanying workforce.
The new Target store at Hadley Center is the third one that NRDC is currently doing for the chain. The company recently opened a store in NRDC's North Haven Pavilion in North Haven, CT, and is constructing yet another at the developer's existing Hawley Lane Plaza in Trumbull, CT. And among NRDC's other current projects in the Garden State is the 212,000-sf Commons in Phillipsburg.
