Demolition of the now-vacant former maximum-security wing of the prison is scheduled to take place this month following an ongoing asbestos removal program. Construction of a new juvenile detention center adjacent the prison is scheduled to begin in January 2005.
The prison and its related facilities, including a work-release center in Pocopson Twp., is approved for an inmate capacity of 640. At present, according to prison records, the daily population averages nearly 900. There currently is capacity for 60 female prisoners; however, according to prison records, that figure that is routinely exceeded resulting in excessive transportation costs to locate women prisoners to the Mifflin County Prison, which is 140 miles away.
