Lakefront Supportive Housing is building a five-story, single-room-occupancy structure at 1230-54 N. Clybourn Ave., designed by Murphy Jahn Architects. Department of planning and development officials hope a mixed-use building can be built at the northwest corner of Clybourn and Division Street, giving the appearance of a single structure. The 42,618-sf site is zoned C1-2, which would allow for a building of nearly 93,000 sf.

The proposed building will include a mix of replacement units for Chicago Housing Authority residents, affordable as well as market-rate units. While developers will be allowed to bring their own architect to the table, the city wants Murphy Jahn, the firm that includes renowned architect Helmut Jahn, as part of the team with Lakefront Supportive Housing. "The SRO building has gotten attention, and attracted more development in the neighborhood," says 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. "This is a very unique development."

The department of planning and development will issue a request for qualifications, hoping to create a short list of four developers or less, who would be invited to make presentations with project budgets, says project manager Bennett Haller. The department would then select a single developer to negotiate a redevelopment agreement.

The department's action was endorsed Tuesday by the community development commission.
