01/05/05:Is this any way to run an airline?  Delta has announced it will slash most of its fares by 50% with a new program called SimpliFares  Other than its own internal problems, this program is a response to some of the start-up discount airlines that have captured more of the travel business over the past few years. We will see in rapid-fire order how this strategy translates into a revitalized business. The competition is forcing other changes in the airlines that might have an indirect impact on all of you. Cutbacks are impacting travel hubs. If these vanish, it's not a reach to see some airports turn into virtual ghost towns--with a dire impact on the local community's economic survival. We would all be wise to keep an eye toward one industry's scramble for solvency.  It may hit you harder than you know.
