01/12/05: A new report from the Economic Policy Institute (sponsored by the US Economic-China Security Review Commission) indicates that we have lost more than 1.6 million jobs to China. That situation is leading to an ever-increasing trade gap. However, before too much partisan hay is made about this report, there are two points that need to be made. First, EPI is a pro-labor organization and has much political capital to gain by this report. Second, these job losses, which are primarily in the textile and apparel industries, occurred from 1989 to 2003. In other words, as the US was creating new industries and spawning tens of millions of new job opportunities, some old-line industries were being phased out. However, a dire warning in the report that should be noted is that middle and upper-level tech jobs are now going overseas. Therein lies the real challenge for US-based business leaders.
