Newton County officials have pledged $2 million to help pay for equipment at the new campus and also will contribute $550,000 in infrastructure improvements to the property, the county confirms. The campus, expected to accommodate 5,000 students within several years, will be the state's first public college in the area. Initial enrollment is expected to reach 3,800.

Georgia Perimeter College, the state's third largest college, has 21,000 students attending area campuses is Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody and Lawrenceville. The college also has centers in Alpharetta and Rockdale.

College officials say the new campus is needed to accommodate the growing population and ongoing commercial developments in a corridor running 25 miles to 60 miles east of Downtown Atlanta.
