Minneapolis-based Target Corp. plans to break ground by the summer on an estimated $90-million, 1.5-million-sf regional distribution center on Interstate 95 near Midway, about 30 miles south of here. In Macon, Bass Pro Shops of Springfield, MO plans an estimated $48-million, 600,000-sf outdoor center that will also include a regional distribution center.
Target's center, scheduled to open in 2007, will have an initial staff of 500. An additional 300 jobs could be created when the center expands in future years, according to company officials. Target selected the metro-area site in Liberty County after studying other locations in Georgia and Florida.
State officials confirm Target may qualify for more than $6 million in economic incentives that include two state grants and $1 million in Department of Transportation road improvement funds. Target has another distribution center in Tifton that employs 800 workers.
In Macon, the Bass Pro Shops sports center will anchor a planned 207-acre development by locally based Fickling & Co. Inc. The project, off Interstate 75, has been approved for 500,000 sf of retail, restaurants and hotels. The regional distribution center will be the first of its kind for Bass and will serve the company's Southeast customers. Bass Pro Shops has 26 retail locations in 17 states and Canada.
