The 49-year-old developer was killed when he fell from a wood platform on a lift crane while inspecting the third-story construction of his 82-room Hampton Inn Suites in Sumter County. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the Jan. 24 afternoon accident which occurred on Country Road 466 near Buena Vista Boulevard.
Steinmetz was one of the Villages' most active developers over the past 10 years. Among recent projects completed by his Steinmetz Construction Co. were the Microtel Inn and Suites on South US 27-441 in nearby Lady Lake; the 152-unit Caleb's Place off Old Dixie Highway; and the Paradise Plaza Shopping Center on US 27-441.
Steinmetz and his family moved to Lake County from his Worcester, MA birthplace in the mid-1970s. He formerly owned and operated Coldwell Banker All Village Realty in Lady Lake.
