02/02/05: One of the most enduring aspects of our market system is the ability of the smaller enterprise to rise up and become an industry force. Just as a small Manhattan bookstore that grew into Barnes & Noble or the Seattle coffee shop that became Starbuck’s both redefined our shopping habits, a new player is emerging in the banking industry. Commerce Bank, a regional player in New Jersey, has tripled its retail locations since 1998 in the New York Tri-State region and is now embarking on growth opportunities in the Baltimore/Washington Metroplex, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Those new branches—as many as 75 this year--also means approximately 1,800 new jobs. Whoever said that branch banking was dead surely never gave thought to the ability of such up-and-coming players to once again redefine the retail chain. Remember: Montgomery Ward was once thought invincible.
