02/17/05:Carl Sandburg once said, "What if we threw a war and nobody came?" Well, what if we threw a hockey season and the teams didn't come? In the face of the NHL strike it's interesting to note that no professional sports league has ever cancelled its entire season due to a strike. It's certainly a point of differentiation between the NHL and other sports leagues—the NBA or NFL--though a dubious one at best. And it's an apt metaphor for other cyclical businesses, let's say.. . real estate. It's easy to get negative publicity, but how good are you at promoting your product and service when there are so many different options and choices for the end-user?  It's always a good idea to revisit continually how you differentiate yourself from the competitor.  The last thing you ever want to hear is, "And you're with whom?"
