The current owner of the two-story, four-wing Holmdel complex, an institutional investor that has not been identified, gave the for-sale and/or for-lease marketing assignment for the building to the Chatham-based Garibaldi Group earlier this year. A spokesman for Garibaldi did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.
A Vonage spokesman, meanwhile, would only confirm that "we are close to signing a lease." Vonage declined to identify the location, but an industry source with knowledge of the pending deal tells GlobeSt.com that 23 Main St., which is situated on Route 520 in this Monmouth County community, is the destination.
Vonage currently has 1,000 staffers at its Edison location and projects a total of 2,000 employees by the end of this year. Its hiring and pending move are being driven by the fact that its business has grown to 550,000 customers in the US, Canada and UK, up from 130,000 customers just a year ago. Founded in 2001, the company provides Internet-based telephone service using Voice Over Internet Protocol or VOIP. The company spokesman estimates that Vonage is signing up customers at the rate of 15,000 a week.
The 23 Main St. building was built for Prudential in 1977, which shed it as excess space last year. The facility, which sits on an 88-acre site that has room for expansion, would host Vonage's corporate offices, a call center, network operations, R&D and other functions currently located at its Edison facility.
