ATLANTA-Gwinnett County commissioners have approved a request from leading area retailers and other merchants to form a Community Improvement District to tax themselves.
The district potentially could raise $1 million annually that would pay for landscaping, road upgrades, new sidewalks and other property improvements needed to attract new tenants, county staffers tell GlobeSt.com. The district project also hopes to attract tenants to the vacant 80,000-sf Macy's department store at Gwinnett Place.
Among the 120-member retailer-merchant group are the 1.9-million-sf Mall of Georgia, the 1.24-million-sf Gwinnett Place and the 1.2-million-sf Discover Mills shopping center. The group collectively owns 189 properties valued at about $500,000, according to county officials. Gwinnett County houses a total 10 million sf of retail, according to GlobeSt.com research.
The retailer-merchant group, along with the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, has been trying to form a Community Improvement District for three years. The tax rate for the individual businesses won't be set until a board of directors is selected.
