03/31/05: When it comes to picking a business leader, there are very few places to reach. The richest poaching grounds are obviously the competition. A news report indicates that Hewlett Packard has tapped Mark Hurd as its CEO to replace recently ousted Carly Fiorina. Hurd is currently the CEO of NCR, another information systems company. Not all companies follow the path, however. While Grubb & Ellis reached out to the real estate sector when it appointed Mark Rose as its CEO, and CBRE did the same with its own Brett White, Jones Lang LaSalle opted for "outsider" expertise when Colin Dyer was tapped. The bottom line here is clearly that whether the selection is homegrown or from outside industries, the CEO position is definitely in play, and it will be interesting to see where the next big move will be.
