Blue Bell, PA-based Skanska USA Building Inc. just completed the cardiac unit and is providing construction management of the emergency department project. That construction will begin in the third quarter of this year, and substantial completion is scheduled for third quarter 2006, according to John DeFazio, SVP of Skanska's Philadelphia office and manager of the Holy Redeemer account.
Phase I of the emergency department project calls for "complete revamping of the existing 15,000-sf facility, plus a slight, approximately 2,500-sf expansion into adjacent existing spaces," DeFazio tells GlobeSt.com. The existing department is at least 15 to 20 years old, he says, and "the initial renovation will help accommodate growing patient demand, improve patient flow, increase privacy, add a new walk-in entrance, and upgrade overall appearance." Charlotte, NC-based Freeman White Architects is architect for phase one. The next phase calls for two separate additions to the emergency department, which will expand the department to approximately 35,000 sf, according to DeFazio says.
In renovating and expanding the cardiac care unit, Skanska revamped an existing cardiac catheterization lab and added two new ones, plus a rehab area, covering a total area of more than 5,000 sf. Skanska USA Building is affiliated with Parsippany, NJ-based Skanska USA and part of the Skanska AB global group of companies based in Stockholm, Sweden. It has specialist expertise in healthcare construction as well as other building sectors.
