Uptown Square is the newest component of Lindbergh City Center, a nationally recognized Transit Oriented Development community centered around or near a transit station. The Lindbergh Marta station is headquarters for Marta and BellSouth.

"Today we are putting the 'live' into this pioneering live/work/play development," developer Harold A. Dawson says. "This Smart Growth community is good for Atlanta and it is good for the environment" because "it uses available intown land, which reduces suburban sprawl, and it decreases reliance on cars, which contributes to cleaner air."

Uptown Square is a public/private partnership involving the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, Urban Residential Finance Authority of the City of Atlanta and Harold A. Dawson Co.

Marta general manager and CEO Nathaniel P. Ford calls the development "a wonderful addition to Lindbergh City Center and Marta's Transit Oriented Development program." Like Dawson, Ford says, "We know that communities like Uptown Square will help reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and make transit a more convenient choice for their residents."

Others attending the groundbreaking were Mayor Shirley Franklin, US Sen. Johnny Isakson, Congressman John Lewis, Gov. Sonny Perdue's chief of staff John Watson, Buckhead Coalition president Sam Massell, the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery and Marta board member Juanita Abernathy.

All of the speakers noted the prime amenities of Uptown Square--proximity to the nightlife in Midtown, Downtown and Buckhead; the Marta rail routes to several major malls, including Lenox and Perimeter; and its closeness to a vibrant arts community that includes the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and the Miami Circle design district.

Uptown Square's first residents are expected to move in early next year. Living areas in the apartments range from 520 sf to 1,300 sf. Regions Bank, RBC Centura Bank and private investors are funding the development. Lane Co. is building and managing Uptown Square. Carter is the master developer for the project.
