The estimated construction cost of this terminal is $34 million, according to an area industrial market specialist who spoke on condition of anonymity. It is expected to reach completion in summer 2006. Current FedEx Ground operations in Fort Lauderdale and a FedEx Home Delivery facility here, which aggregate approximately 65,000 sf, will consolidate in the new facility.
This site was chosen "for its proximity to customers, major highways and a strong local labor pool," says Mark DiBlasi, VP of FedEx Ground. The company will expand its South Florida workforce from the current 200 to 356. Advanced materials handling systems in the center will be capable of processing more than 10,000 packages an hour, he says.
Charlotte, NC-based Levine Properties and McNaughton Properties are the developers of the facility. Deerfield Beach-based Kenneth R. Carlson is the architect and Boca Raton-based Itasca Construction Associates is general contractor.
FedEx Ground's nationwide growth plan calls for construction of nine new hubs, expansion of 30 existing ones and relocation of approximately 290 pickup and delivery terminals by 2010. New hubs, under construction in the metro areas of Cincinnati, Dallas, Memphis and Hagerstown, MD are scheduled to open between now and late 2006.
