The new office subject is cropping up again because County Mayor Rich Crotty and his staff are working on a new two-year budget, comparing rents the county currently pays for space versus the cost of constructing new space. The county's administrative staff and commissioners' offices are currently housed in a five-story, 20-year-old Downtown structure whose 200,000-sf size can't accommodate other departments and can't expand because of limited available land nearby, county officials point out. The county itself owns five million sf of office and warehouse space. The Orange County Convention Center alone totals seven million sf of gross space which still isn't sufficient to store new warehouse materials, staffers tell GlobeSt.com.
