The project doubles the size of the art center, adding 10,000 sf of new gallery space, a library of contemporary art, interactive educational lounges, a 385-seat theater and a refurbished cinema. The project also includes street-level and rooftop terraces and plazas and lounges for both small and large groups; 20.21, a fine-dining restaurant; and Gallery 8 Cafi, operated by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck.
The original wing was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes and opened in 1971. Herzog & de Meuron partner Jacques Herzog and the locally based architectural firm Hammel, Green and Abrahamson collaborated with the Walker on the site plan and design. Landscape architect Michel Desvigne is designing a new four-acre public park that in the project's second phase will link the Walker with the existing Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Noted lighting designer Arnold Chan, founder of Isometrix Lighting + Design, is also part of the project team.
