The $60-million construction cost is supported by a $25-million donation from Campbell Soup heiress Dorrance H. Hamilton after whom the building and plaza will be named. The project replaces a parking garage and concrete square on the north side of Locust Street between 10th and 11th streets.

"The complex will be a major addition to the redevelopment of this critical area of Center City," says Robert L. Barchi, president of the university. "It will help us create an academic sense of community we've really never had before. The college green will provide a much-needed open space in which students and faculty can informally interact with each other and with the surrounding community."

The building features a curved facade with large expanses of glass overlooking the plaza and an entrance facing the plaza. It will have common meeting areas on each floor and a rooftop terrace and lounge for special events. The architect is locally based Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann Associates, and landscape architect is Andropogon Associates, also based here. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this fall, and completion is anticipated in two years.
