04/28/05: Is it time to get dust off your platform shoes, boogie oogie oogie and hang out at the YMCA? It may sound retro, but Stagflation--after a quarter-century hibernation--is back. First-quarter GDP growth, at 3.1%, was the slowest in two years. But there was a 2.2% pickup in prices (excluding food and energy) for the same quarter--the steepest in years. Basically, the Fed may need to step in and raise interest rates to stem inflation while domestic growth slows. Economists actually believe that this toxic mix may result in a return to economic conditions we haven't seen since the late 1970s--Stagflation. With this in mind, we can use the benefit of hindsight to be prepared should such a scenario play out. Where are the Bee Gees when you really need them?
