botanical garden

Neither the Haar's nor a representative for Garden Under Glass returned calls seeking comment. A spokesman from the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority said control of the parcel was turned over to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society by the Legislature about 15 years ago. Allison Aulbridge, marketing coordinator for the state horticultural group tells GlobeSt.com the organization is no longer involved in the project to develop the parcel into a botanical garden and conservation learning center.

"We're not playing an active role in the project, Aulbridge says. In their letter to Garden Under Glass, the Haars' said they can no longer continue planning the project without "financial resources." The couple have been developing the concept, known as the Darwin Project, since 2003. The project has been faced with numerous setbacks including the failure to raise enough funds.
