The new restaurants will continue a rapid pace of expansion that included the opening of 26 restaurants in the past year. The new deals "set a course for the most aggressive growth path the Johnny Rockets chain has ever embarked upon," says Mike Shumsky, chairman and CEO of The Johnny Rockets Group Inc.

The new units will include 10 to be developed by franchisee Lloyd Sugarman in Manhattan, who will now be involved in over 18 Johnny Rockets locations in Minnesota, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York; six locations on Royal Caribbean International cruise ships, more than doubling the existing count; four new units in the Phoenix area by Ron Weeden of Johnny Rockets Scottsdale Inc.; and three new Coyote Ventures Johnny Rockets restaurants in the Phoenix area by Derek Damon and Kevin Thomson, who now operate four of the restaurants in New Mexico and Arizona.

Johnny Rockets, a privately held chain that began in Los Angeles in 1986, now operates its 173 units in 29 states and seven countries. It serves hamburgers, fries, milkshakes and malts, apple pie, sandwiches and flavored soda pop in a setting the company describes as classic Americana and "the All-American diner look," with a juke box playing songs for a nickel, accompanied by dancing waiters and waitresses.
