05/19/05: The effort to rebuild the site where the World Trade Center once stood has become a total mess. This situation is nothing less than a lesson in urban planning gone awry. There are so many different factions disputing the use, size, viability, design and safety of the new proposals, it may be another decade before anything comes out of the ground. New York State's chief executive, Governor George Pataki, has shown little stomach for the fight, and his elective future now rests on the final outcome of this situation. The powers that be owe it to New York, America and the entire world to make the unwavering statement that we as a nation can overcome the worst domestic attack in the last 60 years. But that's impossible if we fall victim to our own bureaucratic miasma.
