"With this latest acquisition, the park reaches a milestone, its size surpassing more than six thousand acres as we take another step forward in protecting the Empire State's precious natural heritage," Gov. George Pataki says. "Our steadfast commitment to preserving open space will help safeguard our environment." The new property is adjacent to the Rudd Pond area of the park and runs along the western escarpment of the Taconic Ridge. The acquisition is being supported through the state's Environmental Protection Fund. The park is located along 11 miles of border separating New York State from Massachusetts and Connecticut and encompasses portions of Columbia and Dutchess counties.

The latest purchase follows a recent acquisition of a 12.2-acre parcel at Taconic State Park that secured a missing 1.2-mile link in the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in the Town of Ancram in Columbia County, state officials note. The former Peschel property was purchased for $70,000 from the Columbia Land Conservancy.
