"We're returning more of the business direction and decision-making process to our professional team of brokers, and by doing so we're establishing a better environment for doing business, and providing our clients with even better results," says Ballenger, managing director of the Denver office. "It's a return to a more personal, relationship-driven way of providing real estate services, and it's one that's working very well."

The Denver office returned to profitability in 2004 and the first quarter of 2005 is off to an equally positive start, he says. One of Ballenger's key objectives has been in hiring. Most recently, he brought on Taylor who had more than 20 years of experience at Cushman & Wakefield. Taylor is now the senior vice president of office brokerage at Grubb.

"I came to Grubb & Ellis to participate in the invigorated culture," says Taylor. "Mark Ballenger and Tim Harrington (one of the city's top brokers) both encouraged me, and when I talked to other brokers in the office I heard good things from all sides."

Ballenger's other new hires: Howard Schmidt, vice president, office brokerage; Charlie Spickert, investment services; Errin Welty, senior research analyst; Lili Mellinger, market coordinator; Bill Maas, office brokerage; and Brooks Andrisen, investment group.
