Funding for the tower came from the family and friends of Uberto Visconti di Modrone. The structure will be named for Visconti and his wife, Antonella. Visconti is a former hospital board member.
The hospital's announcement says the hospital also plans a new parking deck, an expanded emergency room, a center for nursing excellence and the expansion of its Mercy Care Services for the homeless, new immigrants and the uninsured. Hospital officials say the new growth plans will put the hospital in line to become the top referral center in the southeast for cardiac and other specialty services.
St. Joseph's is Atlanta's oldest hospital. The institution is operated by the Sisters of Mercy and is part of the Catholic Health East system. St. Joseph's expansion plans follow similar growth plans by other area hospitals and the construction of new hospitals in south DeKalb and north Fulton counties, area brokers who follow this niche market tell GlobeSt.com.
St. Joseph's 346 beds are running at 84% capacity, considered high by the hospital construction industry. The hospital plans to raise some of the development funds from private and corporate donations. The balance will come from existing reserve and bonds.
