The renovations will give the hotels more than 60,000 sf of combined renovated meeting space in the Downtown, Cherry Creek and Denver Tech Center areas, says Tom Curley, Starwood's area managing director for the Southwest Region. The expansion allows the hotels to serve groups from 18 people to more than 600, he says.
The crown jewel of its local holdings, the Westin Tabor Center, 1672 Lawrence St., in Downtown Denver, is undergoing the final phase of a total hotel renovation. A total of $1.5 million will be spent in the Continental Ballroom, the junior ballroom and all meeting rooms on new carpet, wall coverings, banquet tables and chairs, air walls and artwork. Phase I of the Westin's renovation was of the Lobby Lounge as well as of the lobby level Augusta and Horace Tabor/Molly Brown meeting rooms. Phase II of the renovation was a complete remodel of all 430 guestrooms and suites using the Heavenly Bath, designed to appeal to the growing number of female business travelers.
The Four Points by Sheraton Denver Southeast, 6363 East Hampden Ave., is receiving the single largest renovation, with a $6.5-million makeover. It is the first Marriott in Colorado, and is known for Colorado Olympian Moose Barrow skiing off the porte-cochere to cut the ribbon on opening day and John Elway, former Denver Broncos quarterback, signing his original contract with the Broncos at the hotel.
The renovation includes replacing all public space carpet, wall treatments, air walls and lighting in the hotel's over 20,000 sf of meeting space. In addition, the hotel will enjoy new exterior paint, extensive landscaping and a newly re-faced parking lot.
"The regional lodge look chosen for the renovation was dictated by the see-through fireplace in the lobby and a photo of an antique quilt," says James Kattman, Denver-based interior designer for the hotel. "The hotel has great bones. We are simply giving the space a sophisticated, upscale yet comfortable Lodge look that fits the structure."
In its smallest deal, Starwood is spending $500,000 renovation of 12,000 sf of meeting space at the Four Points by Sheraton, Denver Cherry Creek, 600 S. Colorado Blvd. The renovation includes new lighting, ceiling, furniture, artwork, carpeting and window treatments. In addition to Starwood, the Denver-based hospitality design firm of J. Kattman Associates LLC is directing all three renovations.
