06/09/05: Wow, that didn't last long. The "boom" in job growth had a hiccup last month with only 78,000 non-farm payroll jobs created. This is well below the average of 180,000 monthly jobs created so far this year. However, it is hoped that this is only the results for one month and not an omen. The biggest issue right now is the manufacturing index, published by the Institute of Supply Management, which has declined for six straight months. The real fear is that domestic manufacturing momentum is slowing precipitously. Although this nation continues to move from an industrial- to a service-based economy, a large part of our job growth is still dependent on this area. This is where we need to direct our efforts to keep our workers employed.
