The site, known as Clay Homes, previously housed 120 families in residences that were built in the early 1940s. The Housing Authority, which owns the homes, is demolishing the structures to prepare for the redevelopment project. The agency relocated the families to subsidized rental housing and to other properties it owns.

Area brokers who attended the city's last public hearing tell GlobeSt.com the selected developer will have to follow a detailed site plan that has to be approved by city council. The city would like to see the project break ground in 2006, according to the brokers. "The city is looking for a live-work-play environment close to its central business district," an Atlanta broker who could be participating in the redevelopment phase tells GlobeSt.com.
