"It will be one of the largest facilities of its type in the nation," David Bowlan, project director with Austin-based Broaddus & Associates, Inc, which was retained as program manager for the facility, tells GlobeSt.com. The 22-story Outpatient Care Center will be located on Methodist's Diagnostic Hospital site along South Main Street in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The project will include a parking garage along with a private drive to extend John Freeman Boulevard for direct patient access to the building. Completion is set for 2009.
The facility will house 16 operating rooms and space for radiology, radiation therapy, outpatient surgery, medical oncology and cardiac diagnostics. "It's a very attractive building and when it opens it will be state of the art," Bowlan says. "They're trying to be the best provider of these services in Texas and beyond."
WHR Architects of Houston has been selected to design the outpatient care center. A general contractor will be chosen within six weeks, according to Bowlan, whose team is overseeing the construction.
As the largest hospital in Houston, the Methodist Hospital, which has consistently been named among the country's top healthcare providers, also recently announced plans for a 300,000-sf Methodist Hospital Research Institute. The $500-million project, planned for the hospital's north campus, will begin construction this summer and deliver in 2008.
