But it may be September until both projects are open to the public, according to city staffers. Hogan Construction Group of Norcross is finishing the $10-million, 33,277-sf City Hall and the 11,500-sf Senior Center across the street from the existing city hall. The two projects are being built on a 5.5-acre site that formerly housed the Kroger-anchored Oakville Village Shopping Center on US 78 at GA 24.
Planning for the new City Hall and the Senior Center began in 2001. At that time, the city agreed to exchange property with the Snellville United Methodist Church which owned the shopping center land. Demolition of the retail center began in March 2004. City staffers tell GlobeSt.com both of the new buildings will be steel structures with brick veneer and stone detailing.
The city hall will have a central rotunda and tower. The Senior Center will have a covered vehicle drop-off area. The new city hall building will include a courtroom and offices for the staffs of city administration, planning and development, police administration and a multi-purpose room.
