BOSTON-The uptick in the residential market may help to revive a plan by a New York City developer to build a tower over the Massachusetts Turnpike. Millennium Partners expressed interest in reviving the plan for the residential project to Massachusetts Turnpike Authority officials after learning that its options on the Back Bay parcel was about to expire.
The project, which at one point called for a 50-story building to be constructed near the Berklee School of Music, was scrapped about five years ago after opposition from residents of the Back Bay and Fenway neighborhoods. Officials for Millennium, which also built Boston's Ritz Carlton Hotel & Towers Boston Common, did not return calls seeking comment.
The project is among several residential developments under consideration for Boston. Hub developer Robert Beal is proposing a 32-story retail and residential tower on Clarendon and Stuart streets in the Back Bay. That 360-foot high-rise housing 350 apartments and condominiums, which will be located next to the Hard Rock Café and down the street from the John Hancock tower, needs approval from the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
Another developer, Arthur Winn, also is proposing a 400-ft tall hotel and condo project that would be built on a deck spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike. Clark Development, an out-of-state builder, also has expressed interest in development opportunities in Boston.
