BOSTON-Gillette Co. is celebrating 100 years of manufacturing on the 33-acre site at One Gillette Park in South Boston with plans to invest $200 million in upgrading the almost 1.4-million-sf facility. The complex consists of 26 connected, multi-use buildings, a Gillette spokesman tells GlobeSt.com, "and the first building was completed in 1905."

Approximately 1,000 people are employed at the facility, which is named "World Shaving Headquarters" and lays claim to being the world's largest producer of premium blades and razors. "It is our leading facility for the research, development and production of premium shaving systems," says James M. Kilts, chairman, president and CEO, in a statement. "Our new investment will enhance its focus on world-class shaving product innovation and manufacturing technology."

Details of the plant renovation, which will play a role in the company's proprietary manufacturing processes, are undisclosed. However, as a part of the renovation, a new, 2,200-ft public Harbor Walk is being created along the water's edge of the Gillette property. It will be completed this September and connect with the Four Point Channel master-planned, mixed-use development under way in South Boston.
