Skanska has broken ground on the building which will house six courtrooms, 25 holding cells and various administrative areas. Construction is expected to be completed in first quarter 2007. The new structure will replace a 35-year-old, three-story, estimated 50,000-sf building at 3631 Camp Circle which houses four courtrooms.
"It was not designed as a courtroom [building] but as a detention facility," a Skanska representative tells GlobeSt.com. "It's outdated and too small for the county's needs." The new building will also house the Juvenile Division of the DeKalb County Public Defender's office and the DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center. Skanska is confident it can win an international LEED silver certification for the building, a Skanska representative tells GlobeSt.com.
Paul Anderson, chief operating officer at Skanska's Atlanta office, calls the new juvenile court building "an important project to the area." Turner Associates is the project architect.
Skanska USA Building Inc., headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, is part of the Skanska AB global group of companies based in Stockholm, Sweden. The parent company reported 2004 gross sales of $17 billion.
