08/23/05: The news for organized labor is not getting any better. The strike by the mechanics union at Northwest Airlines has failed to ground the carrier. Furthermore, other unionized Northwest workers, including pilots and flight attendants, have crossed the picket line. Only 15 years ago anybody crossing the line would be labeled a scab and have many things hurled at them. What has changed? Frankly, the world at large has been evolving into a global economy while the old-line unions have not kept up. And it appears that they won't. Consumers simply don't carry the same respect for unions that they had in the past and for several reasons. Today's workers have a higher level of education and have advanced into more white-collar jobs while so many traditional blue-collar jobs go overseas. This is not an obituary for the union system. However, if unions are to survive, they must abandon outdated tactics with diminishing impact.
