Sutherland left a first vice president's job with CB Richard Ellis Inc. in Dallas to join long-time friend, Ran Holman, in GVA's push to beef up its North Texas operation. CBRE declined to comment on Sutherland's departure.

GVA's tenant rep team now totals 20 brokers. Sutherland tells GlobeSt.com that he's in negotiations with "two or three" senior brokers and a couple at the junior level. There will be more announcements shortly, he vows.

Sutherland is a 13-year professional who spent the past eight years with CBRE, hired into the firm by Holman during his command of the Dallas shop. This time, Holman spent nearly eight months talking over the prospect with Sutherland before scoring the win.

Sutherland says the opportunity to help build a local tenant rep force for a regional firm was the decisionmaker. "That's my expertise," he says, "to help create a strategy and hire supporting cast members that we will need to become the regional player in Dallas."

With no down time, Sutherland exited CBRE and headed into the GVA office. In the first week, he's picked up two deals as he puts finishing touches to the few that's left on his old desk.

According to Holman, only 30% of GVA Cawley's business for the past decade has been in its headquarters city. That is about to change, he stresses. "Tom Sutherland is direct evidence of our focus and commitment to the region," he adds.
