08/30/05: This year's summer reading included Thomas Friedman's latest book, The World is Flat. This fascinating tome makes some interesting points that cannot be overlooked or overstated. One major point the author makes is that, if America is to maintain its position as the world's largest economy, we'd better start fostering a stronger educational system. Driving this point home is the fact that this year's runner-up in the National Scrabble Championship is from Malaysia, and English is his second language. In other words, Friedman is saying that the rest of the world is catching up with us and in some ways surpassing us. This is a wake-up call for all of us who think X-Boxes and PlayStations are the best way to stimulate young minds. Although it's a bit early to think about holiday shopping, perhaps a Scrabble board may be in order.
