CHARLESTOWN-The Boston Redevelopment Authority has set an Oct. 17 deadline for developers to submit proposals for the residential redevelopment of the 46,500 sf Charlestown Armory. A request for proposals issued by the BRA estimates that 35 to 60 units of housing, about 15% of which will be affordable, can be built in the 374-398 Bunker Hill St. building here.

Under guidelines issued by the BRA that were crafted with the assistance of the Charlestown Neighborhood Council's Development Committee, the architectural and historic character of the three-story Georgian Revival masonry building is to be preserved while the interior is renovated into housing units. The BRA also wants developers to include design and "green" building plans in their proposals.

Formerly used as drill space for local military groups, the Armory was transformed in 1988 into storage space for its current owner, the Boston Public Library, which uses the property to store its collection of children's books. Those books will be housed in a permanent archive to be constructed in West Roxbury with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Armory.
