Europe, up 3.6%, bounced back from last year's August performance, when sales fell 0.9%. In the US, comp sales last month increased 3.2%.

Year-top-date, the US has led all segments with a 4.8% same-store sales jump. Africa, Asia and the Middle East are up 3.6% and Europe has risen 2.1%. At this time last year, same-store sales had gained 7.6%.

The US increases were fueled by a new line of chicken sandwiches and breakfast business, executives say. Domestic same-store sales were up for the 29th consecutive month, which is the longest streak for the company in 25 years, officials say.
