CAMBRIDGE, MA-A Maryland-based robotics and software firm has picked up an 8,200-sf, single-story office property here from Crimson Printing, which recently went out of business. The $1.6-million deal gives the company a new headquarters and a location that will allow it to tap into the Harvard and MIT employment markets.

Vecna Technologies, of College Park, MD, had been searching for almost a year for an area location and considered the 36 Cambridge Park Dr. building before the property went under agreement to another buyer, Connie Neville of Sperry Van Ness/Neville & Associates Inc. in Lexington tells GlobeSt.com. When that deal fell through, Vecna moved in to take ownership of the vacant building. Neville represented Vecna, while Crimson was assisted by Daniele Mazzei and Douglas Marr of Keliher Real Estate.

Because many of the company's researchers come from Harvard and MIT and it has close affiliation with several Boston-area research hospitals, Vecna wanted to be in the Cambridge area and within easy access to the MBTA commuter rail line, Neville adds. "There just aren't that many buildings like this out there."

The brick building, built in 1945 on nearly a half-acre, features office and R&D space that will allow the firm to grow its artificial-intelligence software and search-and-rescue robotics divisions. The company, founded in 1998 by a consortium of MIT engineers, also delivers architectural consulting for large, complex organizations. In addition to its College Park, MD and Cambridge locations, it also has a satellite office in Falls Church, VA.
