09/13/05: Perceptions. That's part of today's job description for anybody that seeks public office. And when you're President of the United States, you better make sure that your message is clear. In the past two weeks, as it pertains to Hurricane Katrina, perceptions have grown that our Commander in Chief is less than completely in charge. He did much to counter that perception with the resignation of the FEMA director, who didn’t leave because of partisanship but because he couldn't do the job. How well that stacks up in the final tally remains to be seen, and certainly, the President’s effectiveness will be debated endlessly for years to come in both print and on the airwaves. Ultimately, Americans are smart enough to see when the message doesn't fit. What we don’t need is a banner hanging over the devastated city reading “Mission Accomplished.”
