The commission called for the full shuttering of 22 major bases and the realignment of 33 more, significantly cutting down the list that the US Department of Defense submitted in May, which specified the closing of 33 major bases and the reconfiguration of 29. The commission's recommendations will save the government an estimated $35.6 billion over the next two decades, as opposed to the Defense Department's plan, which would have saved approximately $47.8 billion over the same period.
Congress has 45 days to approve the list--at which point it becomes binding and the recommendations become law--or reject it in its entirety through the enactment of a joint resolution of disapproval. The 22 major closures involve 12 Army bases, five Navy bases and five Air Force bases.
