SAVANNAH, GA-Target Corp. plans to build a two-million-sf warehouse on 200 acres of land owned by the Georgia Ports Authority, a project believed to be one of the largest of its kind in the state. The warehouse would import containers of merchandise directly from Asian sources, such as China and Japan, persons in a position to know tell GlobeSt.com.
Target officials and representatives of Gov. Sonny Perdue's office couldn't be reached by GlobeSt.com's publication deadline to learn details of the project. However, local construction sources who have worked on large distribution and high-tech warehouse projects tell GlobeSt.com the Target property probably won't be built for less than a hard construction cost of $50 per sf or a total $100 million. About 350 to 500 new jobs could be created at the import warehouse, according to knowledgeable local sources.
Target has an 800-employee inland warehouse in Tifton and plans a new warehouse in Midway. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. annually imports an average 37,500 containers through the Port of Savannah, sources familiar with port activity tell GlobeSt.com. Home Depot also has a warehouse in Savannah.
The Target warehouse site is part of a 2,200-acre site known as Mulberry Grove, a former rice plantation where Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, according to local historians.
