WELLESLEY, MA-Babson College has broken ground on its first residence hall since 1993. The college will construct a 55,000-sf building designed to house 126 students in apartment-style dorm rooms.

Chris Chandor, development manager with the Trammell Crow Co.'s Boston office, which is overseeing the construction on the $12.5-million project at 81 Map Hill Dr., tells GlobeSt.com, that the structure will be completed in time for next year's fall semester. "Babson desires to house some more of their undergraduates on campus because housing is so expensive in the Boston area." Chandor notes that while the dormitory will not solve Babson's housing problem, it will help alleviate the need for some off-campus housing.

The crescent-shaped building will include 31 four-bedroom suites and a two-bedroom residence adviser apartment. Each suite will be approximately 1,050 sf and will feature a living room and a small kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and two-burner stove. Designed by Parkins & Will, of Boston, the project will be constructed under the direction of Erland Construction of Burlington, MA.
