ROCKVILLE, MD- Human Genome Sciences Inc. has completed its 290,000-sf manufacturing plant here. HSI spent $230 million of its cash reserves to develop the large-scale, facility, which will allow the biopharmaceutical company to produce drugs on a commercial scale.

However, the plant will not be open for operations until it receives the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration. Gilbane Building Co. served as the construction manager on the structure. Engineering and design concern Lockwood Greene was the project architect.

Located on a 10-acre parcel at the Johns Hopkins University's Belward Research Campus near HGS headquarters, the new manufacturing plant sits in Montgomery County's I-270 Corridor. The area is home other biotech firms including America Pharmaceutical, BioReliance Corp., Entremed, Life Technologies and the Institute for Genomic Research.
