For his gesture, the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority, will be naming the 2,750-seat theater within the center the John A. Williams Theatre. Williams chairs the foundation that is raising money to complete the center. He founded Post Properties Inc. 35 years ago and is currently president and CEO of Corporate Holdings LLC. Williams resigned from Post in 2003 when he lost a hotly contested proxy fight with the existing management group.

Williams' donation is the second highest next to the $20 million pledged by an affiliate of the Cobb EMC utility company earlier this year. For its donation, the facility was named the Cobb Energy Centre for the Performing Arts. When completed, the undertaking will be the first new performing arts center in Atlanta in 40 years, according to the project's sponsors. The project is also receiving funding from $57 million in bonds that are scheduled to be repaid from Cobb County's hotel-motel tax collections.

Meanwhile, in nearby Alpharetta, the nonprofit Encore Park for the Arts continues to negotiate with owners of the Atlanta Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena for the $4-million purchase of 27 acres along Westside Parkway where a $34-million, 12,000-seat amphitheater and arts park have been planned for years, area sources in a position to know tell GlobeSt.com. Encore Park officials didn't respond to GlobeSt.com's request for an update on the project's financing.
