In other Jets news, a federal judge has scheduled a trial date in the team's suit against Cablevision. For additional information, click here.
The move is part of the Jets' recent agreement to team up with the rival Giants to build a new $800-million stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford to replace the existing Giants Stadium. The two teams have shared the existing stadium for a number of years as tenants of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, although the Jets' headquarters and training facilities have remained on Long Island.
"Obviously, the fact that we will be moving our practice facility and most of our corporate staff from Long Island to New Jersey will generate millions of dollars annually in local and state tax revenue," Marissa Shorenstein, the Jets' senior manager of strategic planning, tells GlobeSt.com. "In addition, it is likely that many of the players and employees will move to New Jersey."
The REIP estimates that between 150 and 200 players and staff could be moving across the river. And while early reports had the Jets seeking a site within a 20-mile radius of the stadium site, the territory mapped out by the REIP for the site search extends well beyond that distance, targeting an area that encompasses Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Morris, Union, Passaic, Somerset, Middlesex and Monmouth counties.
The planned facility, according to the REIP, would include several practice fields, one of which would be under a roof. It would also include one or more buildings totaling between 100,000 and 120,000 sf to house the team's management offices, locker rooms, exercise and training facilities. Also part of the site plan would be "sufficient acreage and terrain to provide privacy and security when needed, and enough land to provide for potential growth requirements," according to the REIP.
For Cohn Real Estate, the site search is being headed by EVP Bart Oates and SVP Jim Glennon. Oates himself is a five-time NFL pro bowler who helped lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory in 1990.
